Common troubleshooting
My data doesn't sync between devices
GutLedger is 100% on-device by design - there is no cloud sync, no account, no server-side copy of your data. Each install is independent.
To move your data to a new phone:
- On the old phone, open Settings → Export data. You'll get a JSON file with every food log, symptom entry, Pro setting and trigger result.
- Save the file to your cloud storage or email it to yourself.
- On the new phone, install GutLedger and open Settings → Import data. Select the JSON file.
I paid for Pro but it didn't unlock
Pro is tied to the app-store account that made the purchase (Apple ID on iOS, Google account on Android):
- Open GutLedger → Settings → GutLedger Pro → tap Restore purchase.
- Make sure the App Store (iOS) or Play Store (Android) is signed in to the same account used for the purchase.
- If the payment shows as pending, wait up to 24 hours - some card checks take time.
- Still stuck? Email us with your store order number (Play Store orders start "GPA."; App Store receipts arrive from Apple) and we'll help unlock it.
The FODMAP elimination diet looks scary - where do I start?
Start with the Guided elimination in Pro. It walks you through:
- Elimination phase (2-6 weeks): only low-FODMAP foods. GutLedger filters the food picker to safe items and tracks how your symptoms change.
- Reintroduction phase: test one FODMAP group at a time (fructans, lactose, polyols, etc.) over 3 days each. GutLedger records reactions automatically and tells you which groups you tolerate.
- Personalisation: settle into a long-term diet that only avoids the FODMAPs that actually trigger your symptoms.
The free tier has the FODMAP database (470+ foods) but not the guided protocol. If you're managing this yourself with a dietitian, Pro also exports a clean report you can share.
Trigger analysis says X is a trigger but I don't believe it
Trigger analysis correlates foods eaten in the previous 24-72 hours against symptom severity. It needs enough logged data to be meaningful:
- Minimum useful sample: 14 days of food + symptom logs.
- Confidence rating: each suggested trigger shows a confidence (low / medium / high) based on sample size and correlation strength. Treat "low" suggestions as worth retesting, not as a verdict.
- Confounders: stress, sleep and meds also drive symptoms. Log those too (Pro feature) so the analysis can account for them.
- If a suggestion clashes with your experience, you can mark a food safe or trigger manually from its detail screen and the analysis weights your input.
I want to delete everything
To completely remove your GutLedger data:
- On device: uninstalling the app deletes the entire local SQLite database - all food logs, symptoms, settings and Pro data. No copy remains anywhere because there is no cloud backend.
- Before deleting: if you want to keep the data for a doctor or future device, run Settings → Export data first.
The food I want isn't in the database
GutLedger ships with 470+ FODMAP-rated foods from the Monash University database and curated additions. If something is missing:
- Add it as a custom food (Food picker → + Add custom). Set your best-guess FODMAP rating; trigger analysis will refine over time based on your actual reactions.
- Email us the food name and we'll add it to the next release if we can find a reliable FODMAP rating for it.
Feature requests & feedback
GutLedger is built by one person, and every feature request is read. If you've got an idea that would make IBS management easier for you, I want to hear it.

Leaving a store review helps a lot. If GutLedger is useful to you, a quick rating on the App Store or Google Play makes it easier for other IBS sufferers to find.
